Staying Fit While Traveling: My Go-To Road & Anywhere Workout Routine

I’ll be honest — staying fit while traveling used to feel impossible. Whether I was on a surf trip, staying with family, or crashing at a random Airbnb, my usual fitness routine would disappear. I figured I’d get enough activity surfing, hiking, or biking. And sometimes that’s true. But a few weeks of random movement with no plan? You start feeling it.

A couple of years ago, I found my answer in something ridiculously simple: calisthenics.

Pushup in the grass at a park.

Why Calisthenics Works Anywhere

Calisthenics is just a fancy word for bodyweight strength training. No gym. No equipment (unless you want some). Just you, gravity, and a little space.

And that’s exactly why it works when you’re traveling — whether you’re on the road, staying in a condo, house-sitting, or crashing at your parents’ place.

Here’s what makes it work:

  • You can do it anywhere — a living room, hotel balcony, beach, or backyard.
  • No equipment required (unless you find a pull-up bar or use resistance bands).
  • 20–30 minutes is all it takes.
  • You can adjust every movement to your level — beginner to advanced.

For me, it’s been the most realistic and sustainable way to stay strong, energized, and healthy while living this kind of on-the-move lifestyle.

My Typical Travel Workout Routine

I like to keep things simple and repeatable. Here’s what a typical week might look like when I’m traveling:

  • 3–4 short workouts per week
  • 20–30 minutes each — enough to feel it but easy to fit in
  • Focus on the basics:

Upper Body

  • Push-ups (standard, incline, or diamond)
  • Dips (on a bench, ledge, ground or kitchen counter)
  • Pull-ups (if there’s a bar, beam, or sturdy tree branch nearby)
Seated tricep dips on the grass in a park.

Lower Body

  • Squats (regular, jump squats, or split squats)
  • Lunges or step-ups
  • Wall sits to build endurance

Core

  • Planks (front and side)
  • Hollow body holds
  • Leg raises or knee tucks

Conditioning (optional add-ons)

  • Sprints
  • Jump rope
  • High knees
  • Burpees
  • Mountain climbers

Some days I follow a structured plan (I’ve really enjoyed using the Gymaholic app for this — it’s great for customizable calisthenics workouts). Other days I just freestyle it with whatever feels right.

The key is consistency over time. One workout won’t change your life. But showing up a few times a week, month after month? That’s where your body starts to feel stronger, healthier, and more capable.

5 Tips for Staying Consistent (Even When You’re Busy)

1. Keep it simple

Don’t overcomplicate it. Pick a few basic moves and go.

2. Use what’s around you

A coffee table for dips. A stairway for step-ups. A beach towel for floor work. Your environment can help you out.

3. Make it a habit

Morning workouts work best for me — they set the tone for the day and get it done before excuses show up.

4. Keep it short

It’s hard to justify not making time for a 30-minute workout. That’s one TV show. One scroll session on your phone. You’ve got the time.

5. Focus on the long game

You’re not trying to get shredded in a week. You’re building strength and health for the life you want to live. The best results come from consistent, long-term effort.

Final Thoughts: Keep Moving, Keep Stoked

Whether you’re traveling the world or just juggling a busy week at home, movement makes everything better. Strength training keeps your body and mind sharp. And it doesn’t have to be complicated.

For me, calisthenics is the easiest way to stay active and feel my best, no matter where I am. Maybe it’ll help you too.
